In accordance with Harvard University policy, Professional Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education affirms the right of all individuals to equal treatment in education without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, gender identity, sexual orientation, pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, or any other characteristic protected by law.
To address the remarkable variability among students in today’s diverse learning environments, educators are increasingly turning to Universal Design for Learning (UDL). UDL offers a framework for guiding the design of learning opportunities that are inclusive and challenging for all learners.
Universal Design for Learning: Explore helps participants deepen their understanding of UDL and its use as a development tool while learning how to design rich learning experiences that benefit all students in their classrooms. The program welcomes interest and registrations from all practitioners in the field.
This three-week online workshop includes a mix of self-paced learning, asynchronous group discussion, and job-embedded application. Cohort learning is a core part of the HGSE experience. UDL: Explore is designed to create a community of practice for participants to learn with and from each other.
All materials are provided at the start of the program and can be completed at times that best fit a participant’s schedule within the three-week program period. Participants should plan to devote an average of three to five hours per week to classwork.
Participants who complete all individual activities and contribute to group discussions prior to the end of the course period will receive a certificate indicating the completion of fifteen clock hours of instruction. Each week you will:
- Engage with a variety of resources (articles, podcasts, videos) to explore and build new learning around UDL.
- Share your ideas and connect with other educators who are committed to designing inclusive learning environments.
- Self-reflect on ways to further develop your practice through a UDL lens.
- Gain tools and approaches to start to try out aspects of UDL in practice.
- Deepen your knowledge of UDL and develop a strong understanding of how it can be applied across various learning environments, both brick-and-mortar and virtual.
- Learn the principles behind “variability” – the neuroscience associated with UDL that states all individuals learn in unique and different ways.
- Examine UDL “in action” and observe how it is applied in the classroom.
We welcome participants who have a basic understanding of UDL, are eager to deepen their UDL practice, and are motivated to develop into UDL leaders at their schools. Please note that a strong background in UDL is not required.
We strongly advise that teams include a cross-section of stakeholders, including:
- School staff: teachers, paraprofessionals, instructional leaders, principals, grade level leads, curriculum specialists, department leads, coordinators, and other school and classroom-based leaders
- District staff: superintendents, chief academic officers, union leadership, instructional coaches, and other district-based leaders
Participants must register for each offering in the Universal Design for Learning Practitioner Certificate separately. The recommended pathway is to participate in both within the same academic year in order to maintain momentum through the learning and implementation process. However, participants may space their participation across time as best fits their needs and availability.
This program welcomes registrations from both individuals and teams. First-time registrants need to create a Professional Education account to register.
Individuals: Click the “Register” button at the top of this page to log into your Professional Education account and access the registration page. Proceed with the individual form until submission. Invoices will be immediately available upon the submission of the form.
